To live in the present: the value of a day

English The Christian who every day is looking for God in the secret can repeat with the same security this sentence that Jesus uttered several times: "I am not alone, because the Father is with me." And because the Father is with him He is freed of all the uncertainties. Living in the presence of God is living only in the present, with a peace which no concern will disturb. This confidence, even in insecurity is the immediate reward of a life of union with God (your Father will reward you); it is also the touchstone, then we will recognize that we live under the eyes of God if our prayer is a face to face with him, not a face to face with ourselves, or with our concerns and fears. This is why Jesus wants us free from our concerns for the future, but He wants us to live the present completely abandoned in our heavenly Father. "Do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will have its own concerns."

To grasp the truth of this maxim of our Lord, let us specify what it does not mean. Even if it has been suggested with some taste for paradox, this phrase is not an exhortation to lack of foresight.

To this verse of the poet: "tomorrow is the big thing," the Gospel replies that the big thing is today because the present day prepares tomorrow. Today we can stop the threat of a catastrophe; tomorrow will be too late. Today we can predict and calculate; Tomorrow we will suffer the consequences of our current error, or collect the fruits of our wisdom of today. We, therefore, have a duty to look beyond the present day. Those who eat wheat when it is still green, run towards a certain ruin. "After me, the deluge" is the motto of a hateful selfishness. Not providing is a fault that sacrifies the future to the present. However anxiety it is not a less disturbing mistake, because it sacrifies present to the future. You should live for your goals  - yours and your children's - but do not live as if tomorrow had already come. Tomorrow will be the result of our efforts, but the object of our activity should not go beyond our efforts of today.

"Tomorrow will carry its own concerns." The second part of the evangelical sentence does not justify the negligence of those who move to tomorrow the task of the present day. "So much you can do, do it cheerfully" recommended a wise man of Israel. (Ecl.IX 10)

It is convenient, no doubt, to advise the impulsive to wait until tomorrow to make a decision. However to give time, to time,  it is sometimes a way to succeed. In these two cases, waiting means tending towards an end, coordinating our efforts, gathering patiently our chances of success. A man who waits so, is not neglecting the daily work, but just dividing its task. Today he clears, plants, waters; tomorrow he will reap.

Instead, we should condemn the inert expectation of those who transfer to the next day bothersome or serious affairs, difficult decisions, urgent reforms. We are masters of the present day, but only God is the master of time and He never promised us tomorrow. Normally, anyone who says "- I have plenty of time," he lets it escape; and he will later say with rare inconsistency "- I did not have time." Tomorrow will impose us new duties which will not grant us time for doing what should have accomplished the day before. We can not count on extra time, instead, let us take advantage of every opportunity present time offers us. Do not say of a child with a difficult character "- Time will fix it." Since this is not true unless he will take advantage of his unfortunate experiences to correct his behavior: alone, time has never corrected anyone. "- Years do not make saints - said Mme. Swetchine-  they just make old people."

Time only goes by. Just as we are given time, time also deprives us of the possibilities of acting that we have not used. When a day is painful, let us immediately use it, even with its difficulty, let us not postpone our efforts to other hypothetical days when we would be more free or stronger. We often hear people say: "- I wish I was a few days older." And why not a few months or years? Unlike Joshua, they would like to speed up the passage of the sun. Maybe it will still shine for you tomorrow or the next day, but right now, work hard,  in the rain,  and cold. Our failure of today will not be saved in a sunnier day. We do not have what we do not know; the only certainty in our life rests entirely in the short hours of the present.

Neither improvidence nor negligence. With these two conditions we refer to God the unpredictability of the results of our efforts and our caution, trusting Jesus' words: "- Do not be anxious for tomorrow!"

What a pity those people living in continual anguish always expecting the worst! ¿Will they avoid anything by tormenting themselves? If it is dangerous to fool with the illusion that everything ends up solving itself, disturbing anxiety is no less illusory. When one has thought and taken care of all misfortunes which seemed possible, none of these happen but something else which he had not thought of. "- Cowards die many times before their death," said Shakespeare.

The terror of the future is vain and demoralizing. The current language uses an image sadly accurate when speaking of a man "gnawed" by concerns. Concern effectively eats a man, and is depressing. It does not remove the dreaded disgrace, it only anticipates it; it magnifies the difficulties and focuses the attention on all the reasons for despair; It makes us avoid risk, without which there is no true value. The fear of tomorrow not only decreases the value of an individual but it is predominantly antisocial. It is a great panic sower, panics which force banks to close their windows or throw to the roads crowds of refugees in a stampede often deadlier than the disaster itself.

However, the thought of Jesus exceeds the considerations of simple good sense. For Christians there is something more serious. What they do worrying for tomorrow is simply distrusting the Providence. "Tomorrow will have its own concerns." What else is this, but to say that tomorrow God will watch over us as much as today? The Christian does not cover his ears or eyes: he perceives just as clearly as anyone else the signs that warn of danger; but he also listens, within, the word of God, expressed so often in the Bible: "Fear nothing, for I am with you ... Do not be restless for I am your God .... Do not be afraid ... I have called you by your name and you belong to me...". Jesus, himself, still multiplies the same warnings:" Do not fear, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you his Kingdom... be confident, do not be afraid .... have no disturbance in your heart, believe in God, believe also in me." The disciple of Christ fulfills his daily work knowing that a loving God has considered its measure as well as the conditions of his life. He is happy just living the best he can, without losing the opportunity to do his best, and to do good, being happy and giving happiness.

We should reread those unforgettable pages where Peguy makes us hear God warning us: "- I do not want - God says -  the man who speculates on the future. I do not want the man who knows better than me what I will do. ¡ Think about tomorrow! ... Do you know what  I will do tomorrow, or what tomorrow will offer you? I do not want - God says - the man who distrusts me." Let us think of tomorrow with clairvoyance, certainly, but also with all our faith.

¿ It is about our daily work? Do not get anxious about its success!. The man who wins is the one who not knowing where the events will lead him, he is ready to everything. Why want to bear the burdens of today and those of tomorrow? We always have sufficient force to bring to end the problems of the present day. Tomorrow will bring us new strength, as God will grant us his grace, and the burden of tomorrow will not be heavier than what has not crushed us today.

- You say that you are certain that unfortunate days await you, that you will not be able to avoid misfortune, illness, grief...

- Do not be so reckless. The safest tomorrow carries always uncertainties with it. The fatal outcome you predict can still escape fatality. The characteristic of a Christian is confidence in insecurity. Here we are, hoping strongly that God will not abandon us, that He will protect those whom we love; It is true, we would like to know how he will do it, how He will shelter us. Basically, we heve an owner's mentality,  and the Gospel wants us to become explorers. Let us liberate ourselves from this debilitating shyness!

- Your life progresses and you are tormented by the accounts you'll have to give of it,  because you have not lived the way God wanted.

- Let's see; ¿Will anxiety alone repare your past mistakes? ¿ Will it increase your actual repentance? ¿Will it ensure your virtue of tomorrow? The sinner who regrets his sins and beggs God to free him from evil should not be disturbed for his forgiveness. ¿Is it you or is it God who can make a sinner a saint? The feeling of your guilt will make you more humble, more patient, more docile, and thus God will slowly sanctify you. His slow and silent action will do more than your hectic restlessness.

- But you insist that death may surprise you any time soon. Nobody knows the day nor the hour. ¿ How not worry about this fateful tomorrow, when I will be alone with my misery before God's holiness?

- Certainly, but also before his Mercy. Your life is in the hands of the Father. Do not doubt that God, sovereignly good, will choose the day and hour to call you back to Him, when you will be better prepared to rest in the arms of Christ, our only savior. Let us prepare seriously this tomorrow which will not have tomorrow, by a life of faithfulness and obedience. Every night before we fall asleep, we put, with filial trust and with no concern, our life in the hands of the Father, who will take it when he pleases. No feeling shoud overcome in generosity, in submission and adoration, that of our trust in God. - "My God, I trust in You," is the sovereign prayer and the greatest virtue.

The Hebrews in the desert collected the manna every morning that God destined for their food of each day. The provisions that some clever had gathered, became the next day a corrupt and stinking mixture.

- "Father, give us today the bread we need for our subsistence."

- "Do not be anxious then, for tomorrow." ¿ What can you fear, what do you want to know, what do you try you anticipate, if you know that your Fahter, this Father who sees you in the secret, will be with you tomorrow as He is today?

Rather than worrying about future events... instead of loosing ourselves in useless regrets of the past, we must pay our full attention to the present day. However, only those who live in the present can explore its riches and can perform their duties. Each day has enough trouble already, says our Lord.

We will give full force to this phrase, both compassionate and urgent,  if we understand it not only with regard of the pain we must endure, but also with regard of the work that we have to take, and our help towards others. The Master, who does not want us to feel concern about tomorrow, He does not want our laziness of today either. He does not want that our fears and our impatience aggravate the burden of our day. He does not impose us more than we can do. The burden of each day is enough and we will be able to accomplish it, from the moment that we see in it the Will of the Father, in whom we place our trust.

The day is a natural division, and marks an act of our lives. It is a reduction of our entire existence. The semi-consciousness of our awakening refers us to the time of our first childhood. We open our eyes but still we can not see. Our first movements are instinctive. It takes a brief interval before we get used to living. After these few moments of hesitation, we place ourselves in front of the task that awaits us. In front of our spirit parade all jobs that demand us, just as in the time of our adolescence did projects, hopes, perhaps unlimited, or the terror before the difficulties we had to overcome. However, we deliver ourselves to the work of the day just like at twenty-year-old launches himself into a life with a passion that is accentuated as the day is becoming brighter and warmer. The middle age is revealed to each us in how we master our work or how we fulfill our obligations. Our daily work corresponds to maturity. Then come some necessary breaks: the alternation of satisfactions and concerns, hazards and incidentals form a plot that is, in miniature, that of our whole existence.

But, as the hours pass, we feel fatigue, just as the day also decides to decline, showing us an anticipation of the old age. This is not only comprised of fatigue, but it is also accompanied by an urgent need to inner recollection. It is a benefactor age in which passions calm and difficulties take their true proportions. Our thoughts tend to become more lucid. Every night, too - and I do not mean that night civilization has distorted, but the evening calm of nature which God has done - , each night offers us its moments of silence, time for reflection, time for a prolonged prayer. And when we go to bed to rest our body, our mind is more alert than ever. It could be said that the soul is already freed from matter. Then, suddenly, without realizing it, sleep wins us and we lose consciousness. Our work, the future, the world, those whom we love, they no longer exist for us. It is the test of our departure from this world.

This comparison has nothing artificial. It describes God's work in two different scales. Our life is decomposed into as many little lives as days God gives us.

The unit of a day has ists own value. Some people say they would like to restart their lives. "Oh! if they could redo it - they think - how differently the would orient it! and how much better their performance would be!" God serves, in part, this illusory desire, allowing us every day to repair an error made the previous day, and thus, conducting a lasting conversion. "There is enough with the burden of each day". Effective repentance is not about getting hypnotized of your own misery, but looking over your weaknesses, to God's mercy, forgetting your rebellions or your mediocrity of yesterday. God has thrown them over his back, as Scripture says! Today you can avoid evil, you can pray, resist; and you will succeed over your temptations more easily if you eject from your memory those to which you succumbed yesterday. Today you can act better than yesterday.

However, "each day has it own headaches." The fact that you have succeeded in recent days does not mean that you can abandon yourself to the pace acquired; do not live of your reservation; because this will be exhausted just as soon as you no longer take care of rebuilding it. Previous successes do not dispense you of the current effort: they only make it easier. It only takes a surprise to deny a life well lived until then. If we lived off our past virtue, this would soon become a sad memory. Today, again, we need to pray, watch, strive...

Today is a divine measure. The Psalmist tells us, from God, that our salvation is contained within the limits of the present day: - ¡Today you can hear the voice of the Lord, harden not your hearts! Each day has its own burden, "Go to work in my vineyard," says the Father of the two sons of the Parable. And Jesus continues with open language "I need to do the work of the One who sent me while it is day; when night comes, no one can work." (...) Each day has enough with its prayer and its grace. Thus, we commune in the eternity of God, who lives in eternal present. With the Father, in the secret of the present day, we dominate the past and we will not let future dominate us, we will be always prepared but with no precipitation, as the day, divine measure, is the true human measure.

Let us adapt wisely the use of our days to the cadence of hours, and we will never lose time. Some people want to do too many things at once. Result? They get exhausted, tired, and they fatigue those around them as well. Do not imitate the impatient child who jumps the pages of the book he reads to find out how the story ends. Our story will end too. While we wait, let us live it, page by page, without haste. Our best days are those in which work and rest have been wisely balanced. Our bad days, however, deserve to be called, in the letter, messy days, because we have extended them without reasonable cause, due to overwork, or we have abbreviated them, squandering our time.

The morning, for the overwhelmed man, is the time to get up without almost having rested: exhaustion before work... - ¡Another day! - he sighes -¡Start again! But the Christian, who respects the divine plan, welcomes the new day as a gift of God. His first thought is the Father who sees him in the secret. "- I still see this day as a result of your kindness, and I devote to You all my thoughts, words, actions and efforts I will do." And full of joy , he continues his work, a work always unfinished. Today he can do more or better than yesterday. He rises up bright and cheerful. He has a full day ahead of him.

One day passes soon. Life too. A life well used is quite long, wrote Leonardo da Vinci. The same can be said of a day well filled. But the day when we only take care of ourselves is not necessarily the best employed. It is not lost the that day we have been absorbed by affairs which were not ours. To lose our life for others, teaches the Gospel, is to win it. "You have no idea what a day can bring!" says a proverb from the Old Testament. Do we know what will happen in the day that begins? ¡It is full of so many possibilities! Either disastrous or wonderful! We ignore what may result of a day in which we put our heart into doing what God wants, what may mean for us, or for those around us, and even for the world itself. A day with disease may be counted among the most precious of a life for those who use their suffering to grow, to give themselves, to offer... There are days of old people less debilitating and more cheerful than some vacuous days of young people, or days with the excesses of those who inconsiderately play with their efforts. A good day is one in which we did what we had to do, and also we did others a little bit of good.

All our value is in the present day. The rest is "hitting the vacuum and ringing of bells." And this value is not only  in hard works; most often it is found in the hard monotony of ordinary facts., in recommencing, day after day, the same tasks, in an effort to escape the routine. Intermittent heroism denotes less courage than the quiet regularity of daily duties.

All our sanctity is also in the present day. Let us not dream of a perfection which God rarely asks. Each day only requires a modest but serious effort of sanctification. Let us believe the unknown monk - author of "Imitation" -  who has helped so many people to live holy. He reveals us that in the hour of his death he would be very quiet if he could only say that at least one single day in his life he had been good. He does not seek splendid deeds or great sacrifices. He simply seeks to have done all that God expected of him for a single day.

Let us admire the value of a day. Every day is a new thought of God upon us and a new phase that leads us to Him. Thus, the rhythm of the days in our hidden life which the Lord asks us to offer him, establishes us in an inner peace which nothing will trouble. Blessed secret of the Christian soul, that one who Pschari discovered in the African desert "- Do not worry traveler. Get calmed in the peace of the nights and continue your journey in the beauty of the mornings with a completely new heart, an easy  heart. The Lord, your God, walks beside you.

¿ I per què no uns mesos, o anys?

Jo t'he cridat pel teu nom i tu em pertanys..."

- No sigueu tant temeraris.

-"No us inquieteu, doncs, pel demà."

- suspira-. ¡Tornar a començar! S'aixeca així, radiant, i valerós.

When they see you

EnglishWhen they see you simply accepting the modest conditions of your existence, with scrupulous honesty, and even finding a way to help others, they will know that it is false that God is a keeper imagined by the rich to protect their safe. When they see your seflessness for the benefit of the happiness of others,  and they see you, at the same time, quietly enduring your sorrows, always breathing joy, they will no longer think that it is the fear of men to the forces of nature what invented God. They will know you worship a God who is Love.

A simple word

EnglishThe days in which fatigue makes it difficult for you to take care of the spirit, begin your prayer with this simple word - Thanks. "Thank you, God, for allowing me to know You! Thank you for the beauty of Creation, the miraculous gift of the Incarnation,  for all the love of your Redemption!" Then continue listing the signs you personally witnessed from his Goodness, without forgetting his forgiveness, your tests... And as we pray in the plural, let us give thanks to God on behalf of those fortunate who forget to do so, and on behalf of the unfortunates who feel forgotten. And let us give thanks for all the intelligence, science and power He has given to men. You complain of coldness ? Compensate it extolling his mercies by only saying the word "Thank you!" and you will have sanctified His name.

Lend a voice to orphans!

EnglishWhen you say "Our Father!" you lend a voice to orphans - too many! - either unconscious or volunteers - who have forgotten or are unaware that they have a Father in Heaven. You give thanks for those who do not. You take the place of those who are silent because, being so miserable down here, they find impossible to believe that a loving and attentive Father is watching them.

When you say "Our Father!" certainly you pray for those whom you love, but also for those who do not love you or even have done you wrong, and without them knowing it, your prayer can grant them the grace of repentance. You pray for all sinners, both, those who groan under the weight of their weakness or those who have fallen into a discouragement produced by his continual relapses, as well as for those inveterate who insist on not admitting their guilt. And you attract our Father's mercy not only on your needs, which are insignificant, lost among the mass of human suffering and distress... Come to Him! laden with the immense needs of the world... Alone, before God, you are the delegates of the whole Church interceding for all mankind.

The first two words of the Prayer

English"Our Father". The first two words of the Prayer are a summary of the Gospel message. The claim paternity of God, is followed by that of the human brotherhood : "Our Father!" (...) The father who Jesus affirms  to be absolutely mine - "your Father" - that Father wants me to invoke him by saying - our Father. (...) We have no right to treat God as Father, but a condition that we love others as brothers. A Christian can not, therefore, articulate the first words of the Prayer without ensuring that he is at peace with his brothers.

"Pare nostre!". (...)

Our Father who art in Heaven

English"Our Father who art in Heaven." Jesus often used this phrase: "Your heavenly Father ...", saying so He affirms that we do not belong entirely to this earth we share with other creatures. (...) Above us is heaven. Certainly we know that this invisible world where we focus our thinking, it is not located in the stellar spaces, the vastness of which science is discovering progressively. (...) This Heaven we speak about in the Our Father does not aim to locate the universal presence of God, but wants to avoid our confusion between God and nature. God is distinct from his creation. He dominates it, He is beyond it.

Then, our prayer will be sincere

EnglishThe gifts of God always require the cooperation of men. He will not do for us what we can do without him. God intervenes from the moment we reached the limit of our possibilities, so that we can do what we could not alone. We do not pray for not having to worry anymore, but so that we are able to work, and suffer, even longer, overcoming our most violent temptations. What is impossible for men - Jesus said -  it is possible to God, but He wants us to start doing everything we can. Then, our prayer will be sincere and we can have confidence, our prayer is heard.

What do we ask for?

EnglishWhat do we ask for when we pray? Without thinking, we ask the easy solution, success, the removal of suffering... And our Father, who knows what is more useful to us, instead of giving in to our inconsiderate claims, He lets the events - those masters of his hand - follow their course, which will result in what is most convenient to us. He responds with the opposite of what we wanted: the difficulty, failure, illness, a new test. Ignorant and impulsive, we had requested "a rock and a snake." His mercy, however, gives us "bread and fish" because He gives what is good to those who pray.

Am I not listening to myself?

EnglishWhen I pray, am I not listening to myself, while thinking I am listening to God ? And what about the distractions that so often assail us while we pray?

Certainly, you may want to recollect yourself before God but You can not get rid of the memory of a fight: it is the Lord who says "go first to reconcile with your brother" and then you can come back... Sometimes you are obsessed with the weight of your worries and everyday work: is this not an invitation of the Lord to download it all in Him with filial trust? Because prayer is not a parenthesis in our life and work, rather, the joys and sorrows that make up the fabric of our existence must have its place in our conversations with God.

A certainty that prevails

EnglishPrayer is sometimes a battle destined to exercise and develop our faith. Often, however, God's response is manifested by one of those states of consciousness that every believer has experienced: a sense of peace, which contrasts with the anxieties that made us kneel, or a happy strengtht that prepares us for a new effort. Sometimes God's answer refers directly to our request: it is a certainty that prevails in our spirit and  not always consistent with our desire, as an unexpected response of our Partner, that substitutes, within us,  our belief for His.

The first purpose of prayer

EnglishThe first purpose of prayer is not obtaining something, but to find someone, to find the one who is more important to us than anything else, the One who gives himself completely to us, providing to all our needs, not just those that we experience but many others that we do not even need to take care of. Man is creature in need, always in search, but when he prays, he finds more than he was looking for. Prayer makes him  find God, and so prayer becomes, above all, worship, praise, thanksgiving, trust, and tenderness ...

Praying shoulder to shoulder

EnglishPeople gathered at churches represent, no doubt, their certainly uneven moods, presenting God their different needs, but ultimately, the wealth of some, makes for the shortage of some others, and the anguish of our brothers sharpens our own prayers. It is appropriate that, before the same altar, rich ones and poor ones, who rarely meet in life, learn, praying shoulder to shoulder, to really love each other. The just loses sufficiency next to a sinner pounding his chest, and the latter recovers hope seeing an old man kneeling not far from him. The prayer of others encourages our own, and even if we don't know it, our prayer does others good. Sometimes we feel cold, without fervor; and the singing of a Psalm invites us to repentance; another day we feel down, and the hymns of the Church returns us our strenght. The public prayer of the Church sustains and completes our personal prayer.

On our knees

EnglishOn our knees, we make ourselves small, somehow, to confess the greatness of God; being closer to the ground, like Jesus in Gethsemane when He implored the mercy of his Father over all the sins of the world, we also adopt the position of the sinner,  appealing to the mercy of the Lord he has offended. (...) And we join our hands, our empty hands, resting crossed, interrupting their service work. (...) And we close our eyes to descend to our inner world where God resides, causing darkness to receive light, with a gesture of total trust. The prayer is, par excellence, an act of abandonment.

Having prayed so, when we raise our eyelids, we will see better our way, getting a more beautiful vision of the universe. Our hands go back to work with renewed strenght. We get up, and acquitted and comforted, standing, we measure our true greatness, which comes from God.

Morning Prayer

English"- Here I am Lord, I come to receive your orders for today, to establish your reign in my home for my affection towards my family. Keep me from making them sad with my moody outbursts or my personal concerns. Prevent me from a pride that would not let me understand them an from being too hard if I have to correct them. I will not like You, unless all my family feels happy at home. Here I am, Lord, ready to fulfill your will in all the duties of my life condition. Do not allow me to pact with injustice, to give in to falsehood or to dangerous frivolity; I want to listen to my brothers, to watch over them without bitterness, commanding them calmly, eagerly obeying, with a forgiving smile. Bless Oh Lord, all those who will serve me today as I will serve those who have need of me.Here I am, Lord, in the midst of men, to represent the truth and charity of your Gospel. With no shyness and without ostentation, I have to show all those whom I approach what a Christian is. Keep me from being a reason of scandal to anyone and, at least, help me  make someone around me today, a bit happier. "

Night prayer

EnglishThe universal experience shows that the beginning and the end  of each each day are the most favorable and most necessary moments for our daily encounter with God. Doesn't it, the calm of the night, invite us to pray? Night is the time when the body relaxes, the heart and the spirit calm naturally. (...) The end of a day is a bit of our life that ends, and we should finish it by repeating the words of the Savior: "- Father, in your hands I put my life."

Forms of Christian charity

EnglishKnowing the vast number of sufferings our brothers go through, our luck may surprise us, and even reproach us. Neither our consciousness nor our hearts can rest easy until we have participated in their misfortune, until we have given them part of our happiness. And any way our compassion should express, whether as a material gift, our time, our friendship...  all these forms of Christian charity will be a work of fraternal righteousness.
