A handful of rice each day

 What we give in excess to the material life is removed from the spiritual life. The asceticism produces the opposite result. It shortens material life so that the life of the spirit acquires its splendor. (...) It does not remove rest, but it combats laziness; it does not deprive the body of its necessary food, but it moderates its search for taste; and it always ensures the predominance of the spirit over the body. 

The tenant Psichari, patrolling the Sahara, wrote - "Nothing makes us progress in the spiritual life as much as living each day with a handful of rice and a little salt water... Nothing prepares the soul to receive God as much as emptying it of all sensible pleasure. The thought of what is eternal springs naturally of a heart where everything that is fleeting in life has been expelled."

 El que donem en excés a la vida material ho retirem de la vida espiritual. L'ascetisme produeix el resultat invers. Retalla la vida material per tal que la vida de l'esperit adquireixi ple auge. (...) No suprimeix el descans, però combat la deixadesa; no priva al cos de l'aliment necessari, però modera la cerca del gust; i sempre garanteix el predomini de l'esperit sobre el cos.

El tinen Psichari, patrullant pel Sahara, escribia :  - " Res ens fa progressar tant en la vida espiritual com viure cada dia amb un grapat d'arròs i una mica d'aigua salada... Res prepara tant l'ànima per rebre a Déu com buidar-la de tot plaer sensible. El pensament d'allò que és etern neix amb tota naturalitat en un cor del qual s'ha expulsat tot el que és efímer en aquesta vida."
