Do this in memory of me

 So that we could be associated to his unique and universal sacrifice, our Lord could choose two ways. He could have declared that men should be united in a thought of love to the mystery of Redemption, remembering with emotional piety his passion and death, as we do in Christmas, when we remember the mystery of his Incarnation. But even if he wanted to perpetuate the memory of his oblation, he did not want this to be reduced to a simple memorial. In fact, He did not say: "Remember my sacrifice" but instead: "Do this in memory of me" thus prescribing the performance of a ritual: "Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup" - St. Paul writes, teaching simply the primitive Christian doctrine - "we commemorate the Lord's death until he comes."

 Per associar-nos al seu sacrifici únic i universal, Nostre Senyor podia escollir entre dues maneres. Podia haver declarat que els homes s'hi unissin en un pensament d'amor en el misteri de la Redempció, recordant-se amb pietat emocionada,, de la seva Passió i mort, així com fem per Nadal quan ens recordem del misteri de la seva Encarnació. Però, si bé Ell va voler perpetuar el record de la seva oblació, no va pas voler que aquest es reduís a un simple memorial. No va dir: "Recordeu-vos del meu sacrifici", sinó que va dir: "Feu això en memòria meva", prescrivint així l'acompliment d'un ritual : "Cada vegada que mengem aquest pa i bevem d'aquesta copa"- escriu Sant Pau, ensenyant senzillament la doctrina cristiana primitiva - "commemorem la mort del Senyor fins que torni".
