The Gospel and the altar

 To those who criticize the Catholic worship for having moved away from the simplicity of the Gospel, the liturgy responds by placing, first, the Gospel on the altar, as a guarantee that everything accomplished during Mass is in perfect conformity with the will of our Lord. Our piety and our faith have their origin in the words of Jesus. The Eucharist, mystery of love, is the testament through which the Church communicates successive generations not only the letter but also the spirit of the Gospel, doctrine of love; not only the image of Jesus, but Jesus really alive. The Gospel is the truth; the Eucharist is the life. And so as the Gospel leads us to the altar, the altar leads us back to the Gospel. The evangelical discipline, founded on renunciation, ¿would it not be better understood and less wrongly practiced when the Christian comes regularly to the altar to be associated to the sacrifice of Jesus? The doctrine of the cross is fully illuminated by the memorial of the Passion of the Savior. The Gospel and the altar become,  together, the two prerequisites for a Christian life.

  A aquells que retreuen al culte catòlic haver-se allunyat de la simplicitat de l'Evangeli, la liturgia els respon col·locant, d'entrada, l'Evangeli sobre l'altar, com a garantia que tot el que s'acompleix durant la missa és en perfecte conformitat amb la voluntat de Nostre Senyor. La nostra pietat, així com la nostra fe, tenen origen en les paraules de Jesús. L'Eucaristia, misteri d'amor, és el testament pel qual l'Església pot comunicar a les generacions successives, no només la lletra, sinó l'esperit de l'Evangeli, doctrina d'amor; no només la imatge de Jesús, sinó Jesús realment viu. L'Evangeli és la veritat; l'Eucaristia és la vida. I, així com l'Evangeli ens condueix a l'altar, l'altar ens torna a l'Evangeli. La disciplina evangèlica, fundada en el renunciament, ¿ no es comprèn millor i és menys mal practicada quan el cristià ve regularment a l'altar a associar-se al sacrifici de Jesús? La doctrina de la creu s'il·lumina plenament pel memorial de la Passió del Salvador. L'Evangeli i l'altar esdevenen, conjuntament, les dues condicions indispensables per a una vida cristiana.
