When leaders reject Christ

EnglishSome people get angry, and rightly so, against the excesses that normally dishonor popular revenge, but would we have to lament the violence and rudeness of the subordinates if their heads had not unleashed their bad instincts? When leaders reject Christ, when intellectuals mock his doctrine without ever having understood it, and when, especially among the notables who claim to be his followers, there are those who make others hate him because they misrepresent or transgress his words, would anyone be surprised that the masses do not want to believe in him,  and that they reject him in their own brutal way?

It was so the first time that Jesus was sentenced to death by the powerful. The pontiffs had convicted him, the Senate had condemned him to death and the governor had abandonned him cowardly: how dou you think his guards would have treated him?

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 163, Bloud & Gay)

Associated to his Sacrifice

English If the Mass was a simple memorial, could we be certain that that Jesus had taken us in the act of his Sacrifice ? If Calvary only belonged to the past, we would have reason to be insecure about our effective association to his sacrifice. (...) However , the reality is more beautiful than poetry fantasy. So that we were linked to the Holy Victim of our redemption without any sort of doubt, given the fact that we were not in the Calvary, the Calvary needed to come to us. This is the last word of divine love, the word that Jesus spoke just before going to death : "This is my body ... Do this in memory of me." The work of his supreme love, which anniversary we commemorate on Holy Thursday, is the Eucharist, that prolongs Jesus' sacrifice by means of the institution of the priesthood. Through this visible sign of his real presence, Jesus extends the Calvary to all times and all places, continuing, perpetuating and universalizing the saving act of his Sacrifice, to which we are united in the closest way.

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 146-147, Bloud & Gay)

If we behaved as slaves!

English Treated by God as their children and favored with the intimacy with the Holy Spirit, who teaches us how to pray, we would not deserve forgiveness if we behaved as slaves! (...) My brothers! ¿Are we docile to the action of the Holy Spirit? In order to detect the cracks through which the spirit of slavery could penetrate us, let us compare it with the true spirit of children of God! The filial spirit is against the spirit of bondage as much in our work as in our thought. The filial spirit replaces the passivity of the subordinate by a reflectiv initiative, the conformity of the follower by the proud independence of the chief, and a selfish fear by a selfless courage!

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 238-239, Bloud & Gay)

Two forms of religion

English There are two forms of religion: a utilitarian, a premium of heaven at the lowest cost. Although this does not exclude gratitude towards God, the dominant interest is the personal destiny. On the other hand, is the religion based on the goodness of God, who calls us to love him forever, with whom we are united in this earth, and whom, from now on, we can love and glorify with an obedience of all moments. Its aim is not only the future but also the present, and has an impact in all our life, our life  beyond this earth, and our life here and now.

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 117-118, Bloud & Gay)

The way that leads to the new life

English Christians! do not yield to the thought that one more Lent will not teach you anything that yo do not already know. Just listen to the voice of the Church. Let it take you through the way that leads to the new life that Jesus has taken before us. Look at it, listen to it, and you will be able to follow it. Do not say "no" to what you will feel you should do to follow it during these forty days. Do not look too far beyond nor to high above you, but advance slowly, step by step. St. Augustine tells us three conditions for progress in following Jesus:  not stopping, not going back, not getting out of the way. And still he adds a reflection that may comfort us in our slowness: "You will go faster limping on the road than running out of the way."

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 88, Bloud & Gay)

When we admire others

English Just as denigration is always accompanied by wicked pleasures,  it is impossible, that when we sincerely admire our brothers we do not experience peace and joy. No matter who we admire, the wise, the artist, the good man, feeling so little compared to those who seem to be so much above us,  at least, somehow,  we will feel that they let us be part of their perfection, communicating us something of their force of spirit, of their profound sensitivity and the strength of their soul.

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 62, Bloud & Gay)

Good examples around you

English At night, while you wait to fall asleep, go over everything you collected during the day of good examples around you, so many simple acts of kindness you have witnessed, so many gestures of kind virtue you received that perhaps offered a glimpse of greatness of soul. Everything you have admired will make you forget the disappointments and will help you persevere in your virtuous intentions. This earth will seem less sad and heaven will seem less far.

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 63, Bloud & Gay)

Congratulate others!

English Congratulate others for the good they do, and then they will wish to deserve your praise and your confidence, and you will see them  make the progress that your critics would have been unable to encourage. Is the disciple of Christ above his Master who declared that God had not sent him among men to judge them, but to save them? Our function is to save the stray and sinful, and we will only succeed by making them aware of all the good that is in them, and of all they can achieve.

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 60, Bloud & Gay)

The quality of faith

English Some incredulous unfold an incessant proselytism and totally engage in an ideal or a party, making great sacrifices and showing a "faith" that one can not help admiring, especially when it is compared to some quiet catholics, carefree of the kingdom of God, of the misery of their brothers, and of the deterioration of public morality! What a terrible contrast! A mistaken "faith" can be stronger, more living, and even more fruitful than the faith that rests on the words of Christ! Certainly, the quality of "faith" is not related to the fervor or coldness of its believers, but rather than discussing the virtues of those who are mistaken, would not it be more christian to try to enlighten them, so that they can put to the service of the truth the generosity of so many activities that will end up lost?

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 57, Bloud & Gay)

Our unpardonable carelessness

English If the prophets and patriarchs came back, they woud remain stupefied to find  the unpardonable carelessness of the contemporary world regarding our Savior, and would use again the harsh violence in their language to accuse us: "So, you've forgotten the One  who we desired so much? You love him less than we did, we,  who could not even see him or listen to him!  Don't you care to get to know him more? don't you feel the anxiety to make him known? Aren't you interested in his Will, his love, or his glory? How blinded you must be to be unable to discover a grace which was not granted to us!  We, we lived in hope, but now that this hope has come true, why don't your hearts burn with love ?

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 28, Bloud & Gay)

Drafting the future

English We often naively assert that waiting is proper to man, and it is true that his spirit is always inclined towards the future. If today he loses, he restarts persuaded that tomorrow he will win. But how is that hope prevails in our intelligence defying any reasoning? By what right do we dare to go beyond the present time drafing the future? What madness takes us in times of adversity that makes imagine that tomorrow will be better than today? - An instinct - the wise answer. Ok, but who has impressed it upon our nature but the One who created our race to live in a long journey intended to end in infinity?

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 22, Bloud & Gay)

He knows when we suffer

English Let us look Jesus behind our sufferings, not in front, as we often do blaming God for sending them to us. Too often, we will not need to look so high to find the cause of our sufferings, because they are simply consequence of our carelessness, our negligences, our human faults, either ours or someone else's. Let us not say "God makes us suffer", instead let us be sure He knows when we suffer and He is with us to help us carry our pain and to make it the point of a moral recovery and of a spiritual progress. He gave us his son, which cross outlines all our sufferings.

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p. 22, Bloud & Gay)

The acceptance of our death

English  Would you dare to justify your fear of dying arguing that your life was not entirely innocent? would it have been any diferent ten years later? Regret your sins and offer, in atonement, the acceptance of your death: the "penance" that God imposes us has much more value than all you could propose to accomplish. Have confidence, no matter how much of a sinners you may be, let us all recognize that we have sinned too much. We have, poor sinners, behind the veil of death, a Father that waits for us, ready to forgive the guilty child that we are, ready to free us of sin, forever. Marana tha! "Come, our Lord!"

Marana tha! " Veniu, Senyor!"

(Georges Chevrot: Dans le silence, p.20,Bloud & Gay)

Living in expectation

English  ¿ Is it not regrettable that today christians no longer wait for the day when the Lord shall return in his glory? They seem so confident that this earth is not yet ready to cool. If you tell them  that our Lord warned us against this "security", they will answer that his frequent recommendations concerning our surveillance were only intended to remind us that the world will end for each of us when we will leave this world. It is reasonable this attitude as long as the teaching of the Master on the last days is not shortened.

Jesus wants his Church to live in the expectation of his coming. The uncertainty of the  "parusia" shall keep us in suspense. If the Bridegroom takes long to come, if the Master does not return until after a long time, this is no reason to neglect our prayer or relax our virtue. The Lord wants to find us faithful, fervent, employed in conquering him the world. "When he comes, will He find faith on earth?"

Crowned with thorns

English"Oh Jesus , who do I see in our churches praying in front of the cross, before your painful mother, before your Holy Face ? Those men and women that if You were not there, they would not know before who to cry. We needed a friend who had suffered like us, and, crowned with thorns, you attracted all the sufferings of humanity. You left others the claim of having the responses to the mystery of pain, responses that explain nothing and do nothing but exacerbate the pain of those who suffer; All you wanted was to suffer before us. Your bloody face and your crushed body teach us to accept the inevitable evil, and help us wait for the day when we will be able to understand the meaning of this obscure law.

"King of all those who suffer, we adore You. Shocked and full of respect, we bend our knees before your bloodstained face. We thank you for having shared to such point our miseries and we renew our trust in you. Our Lord, we hope in you ! "

The merciful King

EnglishJesus had predicted his death: the day that he would be raised high on a cross, from where he would attract all men to him.

Rejected by the powerful, the wise and the skeptics, he will be forever king of those who seek the truth. This king crowned with thorns is forever the hope and shelter of those who suffer. Crucified, he is forever the merciful King who forgives repentant sinners. King of sincere spirits, King of bruised hearts, King of straight or straightened wills, King who saves and transforms the world from the cross flushed with blood, ornata Regis purpura.

Where love can grow

English All those who have known the doctrine of Christ, know that sincere love for others is opposed to lying, theft, hate, adultery, and generally to anything that is, or causes, an injustice! could you be benevolent without being sweet, patient and humble? What good would you do to others if you were not laborious, brave, strong? You can not devote yourself to the suffering and misery of your brothers without self-denial or self-mastery; the voluptuous, however, only looks at himself, even when he thinks he loves. In conclusion, our love towards our brothers can not grow if it is not on the ruins of selfishness, principle of all our sins.

Quin bé farieu als altres si no fossiu laboriosos, coratjosos, forts?

The real yeast

English It is through the most hidden christians, the most humble, the weakest, that Jesus wants to spread his Gospel among men. What will spread christianity in environments where it has not yet arrived, will be the experience shown by your truly christian lives, a kind religion, a sweet serenity, a tireless and discreet charity. The real yeast that will raise the moral level of society, will be the obscure, modest and calm virtue of thousands of courageous faithful in all christian churches, who oppose the dignity of their lives to the easing of customs as well as the righteousness of their judgment to the bizarre errors that corrupt the public. The ferment that breaks the insipidity of indifferent crowds is the prayer of ignored christians, is the sacrifice of those who suffer in silence near the cross of our Saviour; also your walks after receiving the communion, like living chalices, on the streets and squares, in the bank or in the market, in the office or at home. Wherever your daily occupations will take you, Jesus Christ will penetrate with you with his Spirit and his Virtue. Your life transformed by the Gospel and the Eucharist is the hidden force that will christianize the world.

A religion separated from life

English The catholic who "goes to Mass" and in his behavior at home and in his actions, while searching his profits or struggling to meet his ambitions, whether in his readings or his entertainments, in his prejudices or in his procedures, can not be distinguished  from someone who has neither faith nor piety, he has put religion aside his life. He may profess the tenets of catholicism, but he has freed himself from the severe requirements of the morality of Christ. Perhaps he thinks in christian (it is not sure), but he operates as a pagan. The proof is that if he suddently left religious practice, his life would not change at all, but he would rather continue living as he did when he "believed." Jesus does not endorse a sterile religion without influence in our lives. The salt that is no longer used for salting is not good at all: it is thrown out and trampled by passers.

Why not now?

English Why not convert now? later, will we have more pressing reasons to obey God? The truth will reveal itself stronger? By what right can you expect more light if you do not follow the light you have now? or do you suppose that your heart will be more docile? The longer you wait the more you will loose the resistance and strenght of your will. Later? when the sacrifice is smaller? will you not think of heaven until this earth has completely disappointed you? (...)

Let us not be disturbed by our past infidelites, God forgets them. Let us not fear any future punishments, He will cancel them if only today we receive his visits. Here lies the condition of all successful uprising: today can repair the past and prepare the future.
