Our relationships towards God are summarized in three: we confess His sovereign dominion over us, we recognize that we have received everything from Him, knowing that He is also the only One from Whom we can expect everything we need. Men thought he could satisfy this triple duty: adoration, thanksgiving, and petition, by returning to God part of what he had received. Hence the old offerings of the first fruits of the harvest, or the most beautiful sheep in the herd. For this ancient ritual sacrifices worshipers were deprived of what they could legitimately keep in order to express their subordination, gratitude an trust to God.
In the history of sacrifice before Jesus Christ, sin, adds yet another element, when the culprit resorted to sacrifice in order to obtain God's forgiveness, and chose to be sacrificed one of the beasts that he could eat, loading it - in a sort of replacement - with his own sins as a way to expiate the offense done to God. However, the animal was not completely consumed; part of the victim was reserved for a sacred meal which completed the sacrifice and stablished a communion between the divinity, the offered victim, and the sinner, who awaited for a merciful response of God, granting him forgiveness.
This is, in brief, the history of Sacrifice, with its four purposes: adoration, gratitude, atonement, and petition.

The Readings have learned you the word of God; The homily has explained its true meaning and the multiple applications for your life; Proclaim now, therefore, the Creed, as the old mother of Francois Villon did: "In this faith, I want to live and die." Let us be thankful to our Lord, who lives in the Church, for preserving us from error.(...) The Creed is exactly so: the remarkable story of love that brings a God who communicates us his life in order to transform ours.

Is it asking too much to wish that in all of our Catholic homes, could be found, in a good place, and accessible to all members of the family, an edition as beautiful as possible of the Gospels? Although this does not mean that every Christian should not also have his own little Gospel, to be frequently consulted, and meditated every day if possible. (...)
The Gospel should be read slowly. It is a food too strong to be swallowed at once, and it helps only if it is assimilated and savored, watching however, that it is not only about satisfying an intellectual curiosity. (...)
It is not so much about reading the pages of the Gospel to relive the times of Jesus, but rather to make Jesus relive in our time, and especially in our lives.
The triple Sign of the Cross drawn with the thumb on the forehead, lips, and chest, has been kept since the days of early Christians as a rule before the reading of the Gospel at Mass. ¿ Does this not symbolize clearly that the teaching of Jesus should enlighten our intellect, inspire our words, and above all, penetrate and transform our hearts?

A church singing wholeheartedly, creates an atmosphere of collective prayer. Certainly, it is mostly this sung prayer, in group, which favors contemplation. When we pray alone, how easily we end up on ourselves! Praying aloud together, singing together the beautiful texts of the Church, we will be in the presence of God, naturally, and our spirit will be occupied in Him.
Our Lord encourages us to a personal prayer, the one that everyone should do at home, behind closed doors, away from the eyes of the people, but also to family prayer, and social worship, as it is together that his disciples must renew the divine act of Holy Thursday. Being members of a unit, we must leave aside our individualism and pray together in the liturgy: From the "Oremus" to the "Amen", let the desires and hopes of all Christians and all men be ours: let us pronounce words of joy although our hearts might be sad, let us be humble even if we feel that we have not failed, and let us think of others even if we, ourselves, lack security. And this, far from reducing our personality, will enrich it and make it grow.
Except Advent and Lent, every Sunday of the year, after the Kyrie, the priest intones the "Gloria in Excelsis". Certainly we are facing one of the oldest chants used by the Church. Some authors even wonder if this is the work Pliny the Younger alluded to in his famous letter to the Emperor Trajan: "The Christians gather in a fixed day, before sunrise, to sing together, among others, a hymn to God as Christos: carmen Christo quasi Deo."
It can be observed, at least, that there is not a single word in this sacred chant that does not belong either to the epistles of St. Paul, or the writings of St. John. Will it not deserve our love, if only for its considerable antiquity?

The Gospel enlightens us, the Eucharist strengthens us; Scripture teaches us the commandments of the Lord, The Holy Communion helps us to observe them. The Gospel is Jesus before our spirit; In the altar, Jesus joins our will. Jesus before us, within us. Here you go : the secret of a Christian life.
With equal fervor, let us strive toward these two sources of life, the Gospel and the altar.
To those who criticize the Catholic worship for having moved away from the simplicity of the Gospel, the liturgy responds by placing, first, the Gospel on the altar, as a guarantee that everything accomplished during Mass is in perfect conformity with the will of our Lord. Our piety and our faith have their origin in the words of Jesus. The Eucharist, mystery of love, is the testament through which the Church communicates successive generations not only the letter but also the spirit of the Gospel, doctrine of love; not only the image of Jesus, but Jesus really alive. The Gospel is the truth; the Eucharist is the life. And so as the Gospel leads us to the altar, the altar leads us back to the Gospel. The evangelical discipline, founded on renunciation, ¿would it not be better understood and less wrongly practiced when the Christian comes regularly to the altar to be associated to the sacrifice of Jesus? The doctrine of the cross is fully illuminated by the memorial of the Passion of the Savior. The Gospel and the altar become, together, the two prerequisites for a Christian life.
Aside from the use of incense in pagan worship, this also had other more secular uses, and it was through them that incense gained its place in liturgy. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the Church moderated its initial distrust, and preserved its brand of honor to express our reverence to Christ, to the bread and wine that had to be consacrated in the altar of sacrifice, and to the words contained in the book of the Gospels.
