Lambs among wolves

When our Lord exposes the twelve the mission He soon will entrust them with, which will be to present his doctrine throughout the world, far from cajoling them with fantastic promises, He prevents them, on the contrary, about the obstacles that will raise on their way:" I send you like sheep among wolves".

Spreading the Gospel will provoke opponents as cruel as wolves. But they should not respond to violence with violence. They must not succumb to the temptation to use the same weapons as their enemies that would nullify their testimony and betray the Gospel (...) The smoothness of the lambs will end up, as it should, calming the violence of the wolves , as it is typical of the Gospel to change the hearts of men. And they must keep, even more, of becoming themselves rivals, forcing men to come within the Church: this would undermine human freedom, and Christ does not accept anything but voluntary adherence.

Our Lord has not deceived us: Violence will never "own the world." The only decent supremacy of man is self-control. This is the attribute of the peacekeepers. 

   Quan nostre Senyor exposa als dotze la missió que aviat els confiarà, de donar a conèixer la seva doctrina per tota la terra, lluny d'ensarronar-los amb fantàstiques promeses, els prevé, al contrari, sobre els obstacles que s'aixecaran al seu pas. " Us envio - els diu - com xais en mig de llops".

La difusió de l'Evangeli els suscitarà adversaris tan cruels com els llops. Però no hauran de respondre a la violència amb la violència. Que no sucumbeixin a  la temptació d'usar les mateixes armes que els seus enemics : això seria anular el seu testimoni i trair l'Evangeli(...) La suavitat dels xais aconseguirà finalment, com és just, apaivagar la violència dels llops, doncs és propi de l'Evangeli canviar el cor dels homes. I que es guardin, encara més, de fer-se ells mateixos perseguidors, obligant als homes a entrar al si de l'Església: això seria atemptar contra la llibertat humana, i Crist no accepta res que no siguin adhesions voluntàries.

Nostre Senyor no ens ha enganyat : els violents no seran mai els "amos del món". La única supremacia digna de l'home és el domini de si mateix. Aquest és l'atribut dels bondadosos i pacificadors.
