The Sacrament of the Eucharist is the gift of God to the Christian; before this, the Christian, must have joined Jesus in the sacrifice of the Mass: This is the consecration of the Christian to God. .
It is the Church, in the first place, the sacrifice of the mass is offered for; it is on the Church, that God will pour all his benefits; it is through the Church that each of us will receive the graces we can expect. It is the Church, which, at each Mass, offers the Holy Victim immolated on the Calvary. (...) The Holy Sacrifice is offered by the universal Church, with all its sanctity, and despite all its miseries..
Some baptized Catholics, seem to prefer processors and pilgrimages, all kinds of expressions of faith, where they can show or feel more involved, to the Mass, which they often miss, or attend with absolute indifference. However, the religosity of a Christian is never so real, so full, and so effective as when he takes part of the Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass, intimately united to the Saviour: from The "Hosanna " of Palm, to the "It is finished (consummatum est)" of the Calvary.
Hurry to present your efforts, your sorrows, your sacrifices on the altar, in the offertory of the Mass! When the celebrant pours those water drops in the wine inside the chalice, the priest unites your personal sacrifices to the sacrifice of Christ, which will be reproduced. None of our sufferings is lost if we add them to the Passion of Our Lord. Alone, on our own, we would have reason to complain about the shallowness of our efforts, "Why strive so much to offer our sufferings, which are nothing but a drop of water lost in the vastness of the sea? "Thankfully, in each of our masses, our poor water droplet, instead of getting lost in the ocean, it falls into the chalice, being mixed with the blood of the Savior.
There is a real exchange between our offerings and that of Jesus offering his body. This is the Offertory of the Mass. The body and blood of Christ, food to our souls, come to us under the appearances of bread and wine, earned through our daily work. Would it be a mistake to think that the intention of the Lord was to join the Eucharist to the simplest activities of our lives?
On the cross, Jesus saved all mankind, because he gave to all men the means of salvation; however, the individual salvation of each of us is yet not effective; it is up to each of us, individually, to appropriate the merits of Jesus Christ. The sacrifice of the Mass, applies to each of us the fruits of the sacrifice of the Cross.
The sacrifice of the cross will not be repeated, but it will be indefinitely prolonged. On Holy Thursday, in anticipation of his imminent death, the Saviour offers God and communicates his disciples the Victim Who will be immolated a few hours later. The Mass reproduces this act of Holy Thursday: This time, however, it is the Church, which, in memory of the death of Jesus, offers God and communicates the Christians, the Victim Who was immolated. The same bond that joins the Last Supper to the Cross, connects the Cross to all the Masses that have been and will be held until the end of the world. The Last Supper is the sacrifice of the Cross announced and begun, the Mass is the same sacrifice of the Cross continued and perpetuated.
So that we could be associated to his unique and universal sacrifice, our Lord could choose two ways. He could have declared that men should be united in a thought of love to the mystery of Redemption, remembering with emotional piety his passion and death, as we do in Christmas, when we remember the mystery of his Incarnation. But even if he wanted to perpetuate the memory of his oblation, he did not want this to be reduced to a simple memorial. In fact, He did not say: "Remember my sacrifice" but instead: "Do this in memory of me" thus prescribing the performance of a ritual: "Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup" - St. Paul writes, teaching simply the primitive Christian doctrine - "we commemorate the Lord's death until he comes."
The sacrifice of Jesus is not as much the painful procession of his torture and humiliation as his total oblation, generous, full of love, that he made of his martyrdom and death, so that his Father received infinite glory, and men, his brothers, their insurance of forgiveness. (...)
The sacrifice of Jesus is, therefore, the perfect universal religious act.(...) Since then, the men must only live of its effects, and present it indefinitely to God, associating themselves to the sacrifice of his Son, our brother.
It can be said, we do not penetrate the heart of the Christian doctrine until the day that we understand the disastrous nature of sin; I mean that one that drives God out of a soul. (...)
The ruin of a human work can be repaired; the destruction of a divine work can not be repaired. However, when the object of our sin is God, not his life, but his mind, his love, his person - that is, precisely, what sin is - our human resources are unable to repair an infinite offense. (...);
Sin operates, therefore, a break, an irremediable split between God and humanity. God, however, accepts to forgive our rebellion, but there is the need of the intervention of a mediator, capable, on behalf of both parties, to negotiate reconciliation. "There is only one God - Paul writes - and there is only one mediator between God and men, Jesus Christ, who gives himself as ransom for all." (...);
On the night in which the Incarnate Word came to dwell among us, angels announced, very timely, the long-awaited reconciliation: "Glory to God and peace on earth!" God no longer has to reject humanity, there is a man among from whom He will receive an infinite praise.
