When I review the years of my life

When I review the years of my life, I must admit that I have been a particular providence. The whole story of my life: education and events, things and people, success and failures, joys and sorrows, everything has been made, somehow linked, and finally ordered, so that I am saved.  This applies to all. Everything happens as if the Lord had only to deal with me, with each one of us at a time.

This "single sinner," that each of us is, the Lord expects his conversion, which is more than just repentance, much more than  penance. Jesus, who turned us away from evil, asks us to approach Him, to change our mindset so that we constantly settle our thoughts, desires and purposes, to His. And this is not a one day job, but an everyday work, that takes the whole life, a life of communion with Him.

  Quan jo repasso el curs dels anys de la meva vida, he de reconèixer que he estat objecte d'una providència particular. Tota la trama de la meva existència: educació i esdeveniments, coses i gent, èxit i fracassos, alegries i penes, tot ha estat composat, d'alguna manera lligat i realment ordenat, a fi que jo sigui salvat. Això val per tots. Tot passa com si el Senyor únicament s'hagués d'ocupar de mi, de cadascun de nosaltres.

Aquest "pecador únic", que sóm cadascú de nosaltres, el Senyor espera que es converteixi. La conversió és més que un simple penediment, i més que la penitència. Jesús, que ens ha allunyat del mal, ens demana que ens apropem a Ell, que canviem de mentalitat, que conformem constantment els nostres pensaments, els nostres efectes i desitjos, als seus. I això no és cosa d'un dia, sinó obra de cada dia, de tota la nostra vida, de tota una vida de comunió amb Ell.

Why hide?

 Mediocre christian, why hide? Would you like to belong to Jesus while remaining independent of Him? Come on! do not turn from the light. God seeks us. And if we close our eyes to the light, He will use other means to find us. As the woman who doesn't rest until she finds a valuable coin she dropped, that rolled somewhere to an apparently inaccessible corner, Jesus will turn upside down  our house, He will sweep our selfish excuses and He will clean our conscience!

  Cristià mediocre, per què t'amagues? Voldries pertànyer a Jesús i al mateix temps romandre independent d'Ell ? Vinga, no et giris d'esquena a la llum. Déu ens busca. I si tanquem els ulls a la seva llum, recorrerà a altres mitjans per trobar-nos: com la dona no descansa fins trobar la moneda preuada que li ha caigut i rodolant s'ha amagat en algun racó aparentment inaccessible, Jesús capgirarà tots els racons de casa nostra, escombrarà els nostres pretextos egoistes i ferà net en la nostra consciència.

His time will come!

 Given the hardship, we are at the crucial point of faith,  in the crossroads of despair and confidence. You never touch a tender sore if not with extreme delicacy. But I would say to my brother tormented by anxiety: "You say: if God would have comforted me, I would believe in his mercy. However, this formula leads to deception. Faith is unconditional and you cannot believe on the basis of something. So, be careful! because this argument is similar to the unbeliever waiting to see first and then believe. The Gospel presents us just the opposite: "Believe! have trust in God, for he cares about you. Trust him the way of your life, and await his hour, for his time will come!

  Davant l'infortuni, ens trobem en el punt crucial de la fe, en l'encreuament dels camins del descoratjament i de la confiança. No es toca una nafra tendra si no és amb extrema delicadesa. Però jo diria a aquest germà tormentat per l'inquietud: " Dius: si Déu m'hagués consolat, jo creuria en la seva misericòrida. Però aquesta fórmula porta a engany. La fe és incondicional, i no es pot creure en funció d'alguna cosa. Vigileu, perquè aquest raonament és semblant de l'incrèdol que espera a veure per poder creure. L'Evangeli ens presenta just el contrari: " Creu!, tingues confiança en Déu, perquè ell cuida de tu. Confia-li el camí de la teva vida, i espera la seva hora, perquè la seva hora vindrà!.

The masters of our destiny

 "God willing!" This expression is barely used, because we don't think so anymore. We act as if we were the masters of our destiny, until an accident reminds us that the direction of our life does not only depend on us.

  "Si Déu Vol!" Aquesta expressió ja gairebé no s'usa, perquè ja no es creu així. FEm com si fossim els amos del nostre destí, fins que algun accident ens recorda que la direcció de la nostra vida no depèn només de nosaltres.

Earthly affairs

 Do they really love God those more interested in their personal affairs than in those of God, rejecting Jesus' invitation to join his feast ready to start? Do they believe in God those who never think of Him? Believing is giving faith, and love ... Heaven ? They will consider it when the time comes, but earthly affairs urge!. The Church? They already collaborate, and even defend it, but they have no real need of the Church, of its teaching, its sacraments, its discipline, this doesn't go with them. Jesus Christ? They speak about him with respect, and pray him when misfortune hits them, but they don't recognize that they need to live every day of his doctrine, of his grace, of his presence ...



  ¿De veritat estimen Déu aquells que troben natural d'haver de resoldre primerament els seus afers personals, rebutjant la invitació de Jesús d'unir-se al seu banquet que ja comença? Creuen en Déu els que no pensen mai en Ell ? Creure, és donar la fe, és estimar... El cel ? Ja hi pensaran quan arribi el moment, però els afers terrenals urgeixen. L'Església? Ja hi col·laboren, i fins la defensen; però que ells tinguin necessitat de l'Església, del seu ensenyament, dels seus sagraments, de la seva disciplina, això no va amb ells. Jesucrist? En parlen amb respecte, i li resen quan la malaurança els colpeja, però no reconeixen que necessiten viure cada dia de la seva doctrina, de la seva gràcia, de la seva presència...

We can always love more

 The love of God remains in us if we open our hearts to the sufferings of our brothers, to share them with them, and help remedy them,  because we need to love "with acts and in truth. "

John will not add anything else in his letter. Some would like a clearer rule, a scale that would allow them to judge whether they have satisfied the rule. The Church, like John, doesnt't add anything to the rule, because no price can be put on love: "Do not close your hearts!" That's it. This formula leaves us on purpose in a permanent concern: the only measure of love! When you love you can't  rest assured, because you feel you could always love more. Do not close your hearts! Leave them always open, kind, generous and accessible. If we are always sensitive to the physical, moral and spiritual needs of our brothers, and we remain always with the desire to go further in our friendship, then we will  recognize that "the love of Christ urges us" as Paul says; and that "the love of God remains in us," as John said.

  L'amor de Déu només roman en nosaltres si obrim el nostre cor als sofriments del nostre pròxim, per compartir-los amb ells, i en la mesura que ens sigui possible, per ajudar-los a posar-hi remei, ja que "hem d'estimar en actes i en veritat".

Sant Joan no ens afegeix res més. Alguns voldrien una norma més clara, un barem que els permetés jutjar si han satisfet el precepte. L'Església, com Joan, tampoc afegirà res al precepte, ja que no es pot posar preu a la caritat: " No tanqueu el vostre cor!" Això és tot. Aquesta fórmula ens deixa voluntàriament en una inquietud permanent que és la única mesura que l'amor coneix. Quan s'estima no es pot estar tranquil, ja que sempre es pot estimar més. No tanqueu el vostre cor! Deixeu-lo sempre obert, atent, accessible i generós. Si sempre som sensibles a les necessitats físiques, morals i espirituals dels nostres germans, i si romanem sempre amb el desig d'anar més enllà en la nostra amistat, podrem reconèixer que "l'amor de Crist ens urgeix" com diu sant Pau; i que "l'amor de Déu roman en nosaltres", com diu sant Joan.

They are self-sufficient

 They are not bad - they excuse themselves - those who refused to participate in the feast of the Lord. If, at least, they thought to be, you could rely on their conversion, but they are autonomous, self-sufficient, that's all. Earth makes them happy enough, and their fate satisfies them. If, only for a moment, they had forgotten about themselves, they would have believed in the love of the Master who invited them, and they would have appreciated his gesture of love. They would have understood their need of Him, and then, they would have been  anxious to receive his gifts and to show him their gratitude.

The more we believe in ourselves, the less we will believe in Him. The more happy we are of ourselves, the less we will think we need God.



  No són pas dolents - s'excusen ells - els que han rebutjat participar en el banquet del Senyor. Almenys si pensessin ser-ho, es podria confiar en la seva conversió. Són autònoms, autosuficients, això és tot. La terra els contenta, la seva sort els satisfà. Si s'haguessin oblidat d'ells durant uns moments, haurien cregut en l'amor del Mestre que els invitava, haurien apreciat aquest gest d'amor, i haurien comprès la necessitat que tenen d'Ell, s'haurien mostrat inquiets per rebre els seus dons i de demostrar-li la seva gratitud.

Com més creurem en nosaltres, menys creurem en Ell. Com més contents estarem de nosaltres mateixos, menys pensarem tenir necessitat d'Ell.

When we contemplate ourselves

A housewife could never get any sewing work done, and neither would the craftsman get any task accomplished if they kept looking in a mirror their movements, directing their attention on themselves: this would divert their work and the end result would be wrong. Similarly, when we contemplate ourselves doing good, inevitably we do it worse, because we no longer contemplate the good we do, but ourselves. 

 Una mestressa de casa mai podria realitzar una labor de costura, ni un artesà cap tasca del seu ofici, si observés els seus gestos en un mirall, ja que posant la seva atenció en ells, la desviaria del seu treball i aquest resultaria mal fet. De la mateixa manera, quan ens contemplem fent el bé, inevitablement ho fem pitjor: ja que el que contemplarem no serà el bé que fem, sinó a nosaltres mateixos.

Efforts that are not ours

Who do we owe our good habits? Indeed, not only to our efforts, rather to the atmosphere of the home where we grew up, our family traditions, the advice and examples of our parents, the lessons of a modest teacher, the sermons of an old priest ....  would I venture to boast of the rightness of my consciousness? (...) We are the result of many efforts that are not ours. We, members of the Church, we have been unwittingly molded by whole centuries of Christian life. We are heirs of many people who led holy lives, and we live of their heritage. 

¿ Will I boast of the well I do ? St. Paul answers me: 

" - What do you have that you have not received ? (1 Cor, IV, 7) 

 ¿A qui debem els nostres bons hàbits? Certament, no pas únicament als nostres esforços, sinó, molt abans a  l'atmòsfera de la llar en la que vam ser educats, a les tradicions familiars, als consells i als exemples dels nostres pares, a les lliçons d'un mestre modest, als sermons d'un vell capellà....  ¿ M'atreviré a vanagloriar-me de la meva rectitud de consciència? (...) Som el resultat de moltes esforços que no són els nostres. I nosaltres, membres de l'Església, hem estat moldejats sense saber-ho per segles sencers de vida cristiana. Som hereus de multitud de persones que foren santes, i vivim del seu patrimoni.

¿Glorificar-me del bé que faig?.  Em respon Sant Pau : 

"- Què tens que no hagis rebut? ( 1 Cor,IV,7)

The applause of men

Only God has the right to look at us, because He is the only one who can judge, not only our actions, but also our intentions. Among the surprises that await us in the Day of the Judgment, it will not be the smallest, the silence of our Lord over those actions which obtained us the applause of men. What we had taken for true success, He will ignore it. However, it can happen that  registered in our active there will be some actions which brought us criticism, censure or condemnation. Neither flowers nor wreaths: the Lord is our judge. And He is the one we should want to like us.

 Només Déu té dret a  vigilar-nos, perquè és l'únic que pot jutjar només les nostres accions, sinó les nostres intencions. Entre les sorpreses que ens esperen en el dia del Judici, no serà la més petita el silenci que el Senyor guardarà sobre aquelles accions nostres que ens valgueren l'aplaudiment dels nostres semblants. El que nosaltres haviem pres per veritables èxits, Ell ho ignorarà. En  canvi, pot succeïr que hagi inscrit en el nostre actiu algunes obres que ens hagin atret crítiques, censura o condemnes. Ni flors, ni corones: el nostre jutge és el Senyor. I a ell és a qui hem d'agradar.
